Chintsa Adult Class
From twiki
The free Chintsa adult Literacy classes started as a spin-off from the VA32 Wild Coast Schools Project as an effort to grow the impact of computer literacy in the Chintsa community. Utilising VA32's built and equipped school computer lab, evening classes for adults began in 2008.
With the arrival of Mikee and Jo Ford, the project was given a sharper edge and professionalism that lacked in the early days. Based on the International Computer Driving Licenece, a course has been designed and successfully implemented and has seen close to 100 adults equip themselves with basic computer literacy level 1 skills.
It soon became evident that further training would be embraced and 40 adults have completed the level 2 course which includes spreadsheets, databases, internet browsing, e-mail and facebook. It has been inspiring to see Mjo Gogela take his new found skills into the business areena and he started and is now successfully running a small security business in Chintsa. His enthusiasm as a an active Friend of Chintsa coupled with his computer skills and will to succeed has provided our community with not only a bastion for success, but a mentor to young up and coming kids that demonstrates the positive rewards of study, committment and business focus. Two other adults have gone of to further computer studies and are working their way to becoming qualified technicians.
Classes are run on Monday evenings, which are turning into broader learning/experiential evenings with the Conscious Cinema taking place at the school and a newly launched language initiative run by Chintsa residents which happens in the "yellow building", once called the yellow elephant as it stood empty for years, but is now the home to Nosipho's take aways and these language courses.....Power on Chintsa!
The next phase of evolution in adult education which is aimed to reach broader than Chintsa is through the development of the Big Green e-Machine ........ see separate project listing for this seriously exciting initiative.
With three school labs enjoying connectivity, one of which is ADSL equipped, the potential for more and more powerful adult training is opening up.
As always, the Friends of Chintsa request your support to this project should you find it aligns with your passions. The Friends group is entirely volunteer driven and all proceeds hit their target beneficiaries.
Thanks for following our work in Chintsa.
