TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
RE: Refuse in the Chintsa Township
It is with anger and dismay that we write this as the municipality is NOT performing its refuse removal duties in the Chintsa area to an agreeable standard. The Friends of Chintsa have been implementing “Project Clean-up” throughout 2009 and have achieved the following:
- Removed approximately 4000 bags of historical refuse from the village at no cost to the municipality and using volunteers and residents from the community.
- Installed approximately 17 large dustbins at suitable places for the municipal truck to collect from …… at NO cost to the municipality.
- Run “waste management” workshops with the school and residents to ensure black bags are used and put out at the correct times and in the correct places for the municipal collection.
- Encouraged a consciousness change as to refuse and worked to instil a pride of place for residents living in the township.
- Hand deliver black bags to households on a weekly basis and move refuse from the informal sector to the collection sites for municipal collection on a weekly basis …… at NO cost to the municipality.
The recent failure of GKM to perform their tasks has led to a disgusting state of affairs in the village as far as litter and refuse is concerned. Residents are angered by this as their efforts to support the smooth running of the region are being severely hampered by very poor service delivery.
Both the Friends of Chintsa and the Chintsa East Ratepayers and Residents Association would like to express their dismay over the situation and the Friends group would like to formally complain about the failure of the municipality to deliver. No resident, young, old, black, white should be forced to live in a disgusting state of affairs when they are making collective efforts to improve their environments.
We request the municipal manager provides us with a suitable explanation for the failure and offers us a reasonable solution to cleaning the village as well as giving us a guarantee that there will be a noticeable improvement into the future.
