July - September 2010 (Term 3)
R2800 - Bulk shop for holiday scheme and coming term
To reduce the drain on Friend of Chintsa volunteers and hand over responsibility to the school structures, this term the cooks are responsible for food procurement. Transport and finance was arranged for the 'big shop' at the warehouse and Phillis took the responsibility for collecting the necessary dry food items.
2010 - 6 month summary
During the first six months (2 terms) of 2010 donations were received to the order of ZAR9950 and ZAR8733 spent.
April - June 2010 (Term 2)
To buy the dry food ready for the second term, again we took a trip to the wholesalers. Though this time we were accompanied by one of our donors, read about her Donors experience here.
- R1850 Bulk pruchase of maize, rice, oil, etc.
- R725 Fresh veggies
- R1500 Wages
- R200 Top-up shops
- R900 Costs paid to African Heartland's for transport etc.
This term the school have not made the African Salad, therefore no need to purchase milk and mass. Also the cost of vegetables has increased substantially, despite us getting trade price on deliveries (thanks to Thornvalley Fresh Produce).
Each month African Heartland Journeys was due to receive R100 for costs incurred in supporting the scheme (notably transport costs). The costs from October 2009 to June 2010 was recuperated this term to bring the finances up to date.
January - March 2010 (Term 1)
With the new year starting a bulk shopping trip to the wholesalers was needed. Over 300Kg's of food was bought!
- R2230 Wholesale bulk purchases for the next month (hopefully 2 months)
- R210 Milk and mass
- R408 Weekly veggies
- R110 Top up shop
- R1500 Wages
2009 SUMMARY
During 2009 the total amount of donations received was ZAR22100.00 and ZAR6620.00 was spent on the feeding programme.
November/December 2009
With the arrival of a government delivery only top-up shop were required until the end of the school year as follow:
- R130 Mass and milk
- R380 Purchased bowls (July - loan repaid)
- R500 Wages
- R360 Local puchase to top-up stock
- R90 Mass
- R180 Top-up stock
- R500 Wages
By only buying smaller quantities we were able to ensure that there was no waste; only sufficient stock was bought before the school broke-up for the 6 week summer holiday
October 2009
The first 'big' shop took place on 23rd October 2009 where many of the necessary utensils were purchased. In addition to the equipment, enough food supplies to last a month (which filled up our little van) was bought and enough perishables to last a week. It was thought best to try to obtain a delivery of fresh vegetables every Monday and use the Chintsa 'home grown' Thursday market to top up for Thursday's and Friday's veggi goodness. A breakdown of spending will be posted on this site as soon as possible.
- R300 spent on locally grown vegetables
- R1800 for monthly 'big' shop at the wholesalers. This also included utensils, spoons, etc.
- R725 chopping boards, cutting knives, mop, brush, etc.
- R520 Xhosa 3-leg pot for cooking on the fire
- R350 Vegetables at the veg market in town
- R174 Mass and milk (for making African Salad, an acquired taste as mass is turned milk, the Xhosa kids love it)
- R500 Wages
Little shopping trips have taken place to compliment food the school already had and this was achieved by using donations received localling in Rand. These donations accumulated slowly and built up the petty cash which was then used to puchase groceries from the local shops.
The total for October is R2513, thanks for the donations!!
