Surf Skills
From twiki
Our stoked young surfers will slowly be introduced to the ocean with there new boards and wetsuits after a "few" skills have been carefully practiced and learned! Our first taste of saltwater with our surfboards will be in flat water (our pretty lagoon estuary system) where we will cover the basics from paddling techniques, how to carry surfboards in the ocean, how to approach waves and board positioning when wanting to catch there first wave!Fortunately for us our lagoon offers a great opp. to distinguish who the "stronger" and more "confident" young surfers are and therefore we get to spend alot more time working with certain individuals on certain aspects of there surfing before heading into the ocean.Once we all happy with the flat water lessons we head for our wonderful warm indian ocean where by this stage the students should be super keen to catch there first wave!Leashes on,wetsuits zipped up we head on into the ocean where our young surfers main priority now is to only catch waves and ride them lying down on there surfboards. After about 10-15 waves our surfers should now be reading and catching waves with ease. It's now that our learners are called onto the beach and taught the technique to stand up (with diagrams in the sand) but most important of all WHEN to stand up.For those of you who have surfed you will know that timing is everything in surfing!!!!
